Short being the operative word here because our time on earth is but a tiny drop in the ocean compared to some of the great “Inanimate” objects that I have seen and been told about by my fellow travellers.

It may seem contradictory but during my silences, I clear my mind and think back to some of the wondrous experiences of my life. (Silent thinking told you it was contradictory)

My kids being born and growing into two beautiful women.

Seeing the pyramids and ancient monuments of Egypt

Driving in Cairo

The red desert in Saudi Arabia which turns green for one day only when the rain falls, which is not very often.

Dubai Airport from the roof of the flat that I lived in

Deserted beeches

During a recent visit to Greece, it was pointed out to me that the sides of the track leading down to the beech some 200 ft. below were lined at head height with strata of shells. Not just a few but layer upon layer. Thoughts turned to the realisation that this was once the sea bed maybe having been forced upwards during some ancient (I hate the word pre-historic but that’s another story) land and sea shift.

The list is endless.

So go ahead my friend and meditate in silence but do not block out the good things that are in your past, not dwell on them just as you will not dwell on the bad things. All I ask is each day find something to celebrate, especially the fact that you are alive to enjoy the celebration.

Love and Light BJ

Preventing Stress in the work place - 10 Top tips

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2010/10/preventing-stress-in-the-work-place-10-top-tips.html

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2010/10/preventing-stress-in-the-work-place-10-top-tips.html#comments

Uncategorized

What do we all have in common with our fellow workers? We each have exactly 86,400 seconds credit in our time bank account at the beginning of each and every day. We have no more and no less in our accounts than the person that you know that always appears to be in control, gets enough sleep each night, takes a walk in the park each lunch time, goes home on time etc.

So what are you doing differently that means that you always seem to be pushing late hours, skipping lunch, feeling tetchy, tired etc. to meet deadlines?

Here are my ten top tips for you to mull over in the rare spare moments between crises.

Manage Time.

Every task is important but is every task urgent?

I once worked for a manger that had an open door policy where he was approachable between regular team meetings. This policy was based on his philosophy that anything that I needed to bring to him for discussion was important to me. However, he always asked me to test out the urgency of the topic. If a problem needs to be solved does it need to be solved now or can a discussion wait till a more appropriate time.

The same applies to work loads both personal and business.

Work smart and prioritise

Delegate

How many of you find it hard to let go and delegate tasks to others? Delegation is not another word for abdication; it is more one of trusting others to apply their skills to a task. By all means keep a watching brief on the way that the task is being carried out but interference is not necessary unless you can “Genuinely” see a potential disaster looming.

As the level of trust builds then less watching is needed.

It is the same with children, some parents get stressed and find it difficult to let go and allow their grown up kids to live their own lives.

Delegation frees up more of your time for those important tasks.

Dispel Guilt

If a deadline is likely to be missed, the first priority should be to analyse the potential consequences.

Ask yourself, what will be gained by working longer (sometime all night) hours to achieve a deadline that could easily be slipped by a day or two. This can be a point where tactful negotiations with your client are required. Whatever you do, avoid the trap of feeling guilty about an occasional missed deadline. Guilt or as it can be known, beating yourself up mentally, can lead to a downward spiral of stress related illness. Once down, you may find that you are missing more and more deadlines.

Guilt over things that are out of your control leads to high levels of stress.

The Anger Pool

A related topic is what I call the anger pool. Becoming angry with others and/or yourself will inevitably lead to your own ill health. Of course, if you are so inclined, your illness will give you a perfect opportunity to get angry with those that have caused your illness, including yourself. Keep an eye on my Blog as I will be posting more articles about how to avoid the anger pool.

Once in the anger pool, it is difficult to see a way out.

Unhealthy Habits

Fast food, excessive alcohol, smoking, caffeine etc are all listed by the medical professionals as side effects of increased stress. I would go further and say that they are part of a cause and effect cycle related to stress and other illnesses.

Drink lots of water during the day. Take a salad or a home made sandwich into the office along with a couple of pieces of fruit. I personally find apples are a bonus food to have mid morning as they are low on the glycaemic index (GI) scale and therefore release sugar into the blood stream slowly and over a much longer period than a biscuit or a chocolate bar from the snack machine. Talk to your doctor or complimentary health practitioner to find what help is available in your area to break these and other adictive habits.

Often hunger feelings are actually the body crying out for water.

Walk

Walking can be very beneficial for stress prevention. It not only gets you away from work it is one of the most cost effective form of exercise for most of us. You do not need to join any society, gym, or group to get started. Walk to your next meeting; take the stairs and not the lift, walk to the shop for your morning paper, get off the bus one stop earlier than normal and walk the rest of the way. A brisk walk can help clear the mind of all the mental clutter that has accumulated since the last walk. What better way to unwind than a brisk walk round the block after a meal. Personally, I enjoy a walk along my local canal tow path trying to spot different forms of wildlife that use the area as a habitat. I refer to this kind of walk as a medicine walk.

Walking is one of the cheapest forms of exercise which also can help clear mental clutter form the mind and reduce stress.

Get a Hobby but Avoid watching Goldfish

A hobby of any sort can be most therapeutic and help you to create a relaxed mind by taking you away from the pressures and stresses of work. Sometimes, hobbies can lead onto a change in business/work direction. However the ones that I am thinking of include the more tactile hobbies; painting, pottery, woodworking, gardening, walking, brass rubbing, sailing, wind surfing, rock climbing, the list is endless. All of these take you away from everyday pressures and help to focus the mind on alternatives. Imagine the thrill of producing a masterpiece oil painting and you will see what I mean. I once heard a song relating to walking, one line of which was “I may be a wage slave on Monday but I am a free man on Sunday”

Hobbies that take you into a different state of mind can be beneficial in preventing stress.

Charity Work

It is said that people that work alone either as sole traders, one person departments, drivers etc suffer form stress brought on by loneliness. One way round this is voluntary or charity work. A friend of mine often talks about how he volunteered to work in his local hospice. What a leveller that must have been for him as, at the time, he was going through the stress of loosing his business and being declared bankrupt.

If you are in the sole worker situation, working in a charity shop for a few hours per week can ensure that you maintain social contact.

Helping others through charity work is a great leveller and can lead to a feeling of satisfaction that can counterbalance stress.

Still The Mind through self relaxation

Relaxation of the mind and the body is a wide topic and is covered in many popular books. I refer to the process as deep relaxation leading to more self awareness. When the mind is relaxed, it is able to cope with the situations that are causing you stress and can often bring forth “Light bulb” moments where alternative solutions appear. Contact me for details of self relaxation courses for both individuals and groups.

A relaxed mind is a receptive mind, clear out the mental clutter now.

Yoga Classes

I am a great fan of Kundalini Yoga which is not the stereotypical “Bendy Wendy” Yoga of the cartoons. Once per week I attend a 90 minute session at my local village hall. After the session which incorporates meditation and relaxation as well as a set of gentle exercises, I find my mind and body relaxed. Try it and find a teacher near you.

Yoga is a great way to flex the mind and release the stresses and strains of the body.

If you want learn more about Stress Prevention or any other services that I offer, feel free to email me info@sometimenow.co.uk or you can Tweet me @Sometime_Now.

As always, all enquiries will be treated with the strictest confidence.

Relax away the troubles of the day.

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2010/10/relax-away-the-troubles-of-the-day.html

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2010/10/relax-away-the-troubles-of-the-day.html#comments

Uncategorized

During one of my weekly classes in self relaxation, a woman approached me and thanked me for saving her up to 60 minutes per day. Mr James is a well known international stage magician and naturally the hotel staff are thrilled that he has chosen to stay with them.

Mr James enquires about safety deposit boxes as he has a sum of cash which he wants to keep safe for a few days.

The hotel owner gladly obliges and takes from him £300 in the form of six crisp new £50 notes. These he puts into the hotel safe for safe keeping (no pun intended).

Mr James is called away for a few days but forgets to take the money with him when he leaves. During a telephone conversation he agrees that he will collect it in 7 days time when he is next in the area.

On Day 1 the hotel owner has to buy his weekly supplies from the local farm and is unable to get to the bank. So knowing that he has time to replace it, he pays his bill of £300 with the money left in his safe by Mr James.

Day 2 sees the Farmer having some repairs done to his car at the local garage; the bill is £300 so he uses the money given to him by the hotel owner on the previous day.

On Day 3 the garage owner needs to replenish his stock of brake pads from a local motor factor. The cost, yes you guessed it, £300 and he just happens to have the £300 that the Farmer gave him yesterday.

Day 4 comes round and the motor factor receives an overdue bill of £300 for flower arrangements that he has delivered daily to his waiting room/reception. He immediately pays the florist £300 cash with the six £50 notes that the Garage owner gave to him on day 3

Day 5 sees the florist having to pay a local limo company for a stretch limo for his daughter’s graduation ball transport. As the bill comes to exactly £300 he uses the same notes that were given to him by the Motor Factor.

Day 6 the Limo owner visits the hotel and leaves a £300 deposit towards his son’s wedding reception. He naturally uses the same £300 that was given to him by the florist. The hotel owner is very grateful and puts the money in his safe in anticipation that Mr James is due to return and collect it.

When Mr James returns and collect his six £50 pound notes from the hotel safe, he confesses that the money is actually stage prop money that he uses in one of his Magic tricks.

As a treat for the staff, and of course to boost his own ego, Mr James demonstrates and during the trick, the six notes disappear in a puff of smoke never to be seen again.

I leave you with these things to ponder;

If before the money disappeared in a puff of smoke;

• The hotelier got farm produce
• The farmer had his car repaired
• The garage owner was able to replenish his stocks from the motor factor
• The motor factor paid his flower bill
• The florist arranged for a limo for his daughter’s graduation
• The limo owner paid a deposit to the hotelier

Who was out of pocket with this series of events?

Secondly, if there had not been the £300 left by Mr James, would each of the bills have been paid?

Thirdly, if money did not exist in any normally accepted form, would the world stop?

Bryn Jones www.sometimenow.co.uk info@sometimenow.co.uk

Recommended Reading: How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2009/12/recommended-reading-how-your-mind-can-heal-your-body.html

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2009/12/recommended-reading-how-your-mind-can-heal-your-body.html#comments

Uncategorized

A wonderful book written by David R. The answer can depend on a person’s perception, interest and what is known as his or her model of the world.

To a Quantum Physicist, A string is an object with a one-dimensional spatial extent. (1) Hence the answer is measured in micro meters

To a string based musical instrument maker, “A string length is defined by the note that is to be produced”

To an average parcel maker, the length is very rarely exact for the desired use and needs to be cut to length.

This article is not for one moment intended to lead us down the path of “String length Theory”. However, what I aim to show is that whether it is the length of a piece of string or other objects and situations, it is a person’s perception of something that really matters.

Model of the World

This perception is often referred to as an individual’s “model of the world” and can quite often be in conflict with the next person’s perception.

As I look out of my office window, my attention is drawn to the white fluffy clouds in the light blue sky. The smell of the newly mown grass is wafting through my window. This gives me a warm feeling and energises me to work even harder than I am doing (Spot the faster typing – he says jokingly).

The same scene to Bill, one of my close neighbours, spells disaster as his son will undoubtedly start sneezing as his hay fever kicks in.

In this simple example, Bill’s model of the world is slightly different to mine, he loves the clouds and the sky, but the mown grass is not one of his favourite subjects.

What has this got to do with Business?

Move this type of scenario into the business world. Your company may, in your opinion, be selling the best and most useful product or service ever invented. However, do you know how many of your customers, both existing and potential have exactly the same opinion as you?

We all know that selling is about benefits and not about features. How many of you research your potential customers to see if the benefits that you perceive will be of use to the customer, actually feature in her/his model of the world?

After all, unless you can think like your customers, you cannot hope to perceive how the product’s benefits fit into their model of the world. By this I am not advocating mind reading. I would prefer to leave that side to skilled professionals such as Derren Brown. What I am advocating is asking a series of open but probing questions about the customer’s needs and matching those to the benefits that your product offers.

Get into Rapport

By asking the carefully formulated questions, you can quickly build a picture of how your product will fit into your customer’s model of the world. You will not be surprised to find that it could be different in many respects to yours. This is quite often known as being in, or out of, Rapport with a person. The closer and quicker you can get into Rapport with a potential customer, the quicker you will be able to close the sale.

Quite often, a person’s model of the world is influenced by which of the five senses is most dominant in the way that they receive and thus process information.

The Senses (a quick Guide)

Visual----Tend to prefer to be shown things on offer
Auditory----Tend to wish to be told about things on offer
Kinaesthetic----Tend to have to get a feel for what is on offer
Gustatory----Taste is prominent
Olfactory-----Smell is important

Obviously, most people will have a mix of the senses working for them. However, it is pointless trying to describe a product to a person that is predominantly kinaesthetic using, visual words such as Big, Blue, Fast, Imagine, Look, See etc. It would be preferable to use words such as Feel, Touch, Warm, Soft, etc

The topic of getting into Rapport is such a complex and wide ranging one, space does not permit me to go into more detail.

Did you know?

Most of us have a mix of representational systems with one being more dominant than the rest. E.g. I love the SMELL of fresh roasted coffee, however that is only because it gives me a great FEELING. I adore the SIGHT of twinkling stars that make me FEEL calm. Not withstanding the mixture, the vast majority of the population of the UK have a Kinaesthetic bias.

A Visual person will speak much more slowly than one that is Kinaesthetic, adding detail as he/she constructs a picture of what is being described. They tend to need lots of detail and often think that Kinaesthetic people are dim or stupid.

Kinaesthetic people may speak very quickly and often skip detail in a description. Kinaesthetic people go with their feelings and therefore think that Visual people are very cold and uncaring.

So, Back To the Piece of String!

I guess the simple answer to the question is the length of a piece of string is very similar to a person’s perception or model of the world. Variable and fits the needs and specific requirements at the time.

(1) Source Wikipedia.com

A Business Plan is for Life, Not Just for the Bank Manager

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2009/07/a-business-plan-is-for-life.html

http://www.sometimenow.co.uk/1/post/2009/07/a-business-plan-is-for-life.html#comments

Uncategorized

In my mind, a business plan is a living, breathing, dynamic part of the structure of any successful venture. I also had to put one together, in a different form to allow me to apply for a bank overdraft facility.

Although they said, more or less the same thing, both of these plans had to be in a form that was acceptable to the organisation concerned.

What I found amazing was the fact that neither plan allowed for ongoing management reporting to be carried out in a simple but effective manner. Simply reporting on a monthly basis of forecast sales and costs against actual sales and costs just did not enter into either proposal.

The 3 Rs

At school, we were taught, amongst other skills, the three Rs; (R)eading, W(R)iting and A(R)ithmatic.

A good project manager will take the project plan and (R)egularly (R)eview and (R)evise as necessary during the whole life of the project. The ‘Plan’ becomes a living, dynamic part of the programme.

So, why is it that the vast majority of business owners are negligent in this area of planning?

(R)egularly (R)eview and (R)evise your business plan

Imagine having the following information available to you on a monthly basis.

Anytime Company First 4 months of trading

Forecast Month 1 Month 2 Month 3 Month 4
Sales £1,000 £5,000 £8,000 £12,000
Cost of sales £250 £1,250 £2,000 £3,000
Overheads £500 £500 £500 £500
Profit £250 £3,250 £5,500 £8,500

Actual Month 1 Month 2 Month 3 Month 4
Sales £150 £900 £800 £1,500
Cost of sales £38 £225 £200 £375
Overheads £500 £500 £500 £500
Profit -£388 £175 £100 £625

On the face of it, these are very unhealthy results for the first few months, where actual profits are no where near to those forecast in the business plan.

This may be an extreme example but I have put it in to show that this company is heading for serious trouble and needs to be revisiting the whole of its business plan before the trend becomes irreversible. A complete look at sales, marketing, and overheads is needed to see where the plan is falling down and then, if necessary take appropriate action. Note that there may be some plausible reason for the trends.

By using the 3Rs, a potential disaster could be avoided. It would be unthinkable to allow the situation to continue without investigation until the year end accounts are produced.

Remember

A BUSINESS PLAN IS YOUR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR THE BANK MANAGER
